His Holiness the Dalai Lama to visit Miami

02.01.2010

His Holiness the Dalai Lama, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize and the Congressional Gold Medal for championing the people of Tibet, will visit Miami University Oct. 20-22. He will meet with students as well as give a public address.

Miami established a relationship with the Institute of Buddhist Dialectics in Dharamsala, India, during summer workshops in Tibet led by two faculty in anthropology from 2004-2008. His Holiness the Dalai Lama is a patron of this institute, one of the premier institutions for study of Buddhist thought and philosophy.

After university faculty, including Provost Jeffrey Herbst, visited Dharamsala and signed an affiliation agreement, Miami began offering a Tibetan studies semester program last fall. It will be offered annually in the fall.

The Venerable Geshe Kalsang Damdul, from the Institute of Buddhist Dialectics, visited Miami and held a prayer flag ceremony here last February to commemorate the affiliation agreement.

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, the spiritual leader of Tibet, in 1989 was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his non-violent struggle for the liberation of Tibet. He has consistently advocated policies of non-violence and also was the first Nobel Laureate to be recognized for his concern for global environmental problems.

Miami’s summer workshop, Peoples and Culture of Tibet, has been conducted by Deborah Akers and Homayun Sidky in Dharamsala, the residence of the Dalai Lama in northern India, which is the location of the Tibetan government in exile.

In the new Tibetan studies semester program for Miami students in Dharamsala, Miami students can study at the Institute of Buddhist Dialectics (IBD) and the College for Higher Tibetan Studies (CHTS). Students are offered courses focusing on Buddhist philosophy, Tibetan medicine and meditation and an intensive sequence of language courses in Chinese, Tibetan and Hindi.

Since 1959 the Dalai Lama has received more than 84 awards, honorary doctorates and prizes in recognition of his message of peace, non-violence, inter-religious understanding, universal responsibility and compassion. He has authored more than 72 books.

More details on his visit will be announced next fall.

The science of healthy minds brings Dalai Lama to UW-Madison

March 3, 2010

The Center for Investigating Healthy Minds at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Waisman Center will welcome His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama to its public grand-opening celebration Saturday-Sunday, May 15-16.

UW-Madison neuroscientist Richard Davidson established the Center for Investigating Healthy Minds (CIHM) to scientifically determine how healthy qualities of mind develop and to investigate interventions to cultivate those qualities in children and adults.

Davidson has worked with expert meditation practitioners to determine how meditation changed their brains to encourage happiness, compassion and kindness. CIHM will extend this research to a broader audience and will be the first translational research facility to include a brain imaging lab and meditation space under one roof.

“When I met the Dalai Lama in 1992, he challenged me to adapt the tools of Western science, used to study fear and depression, to the study of positive qualities, like kindness and compassion. The Center for Investigating Healthy Minds is a response to that challenge and will become what we hope will be the world’s premier center for research of this kind,” says Davidson, a UW-Madison professor of psychology and psychiatry and director of the Waisman Laboratory for Brain Imaging and Behavior.

The Dalai Lama previously visited Davidson’s lab at the Waisman Center in 2001 and continues his involvement with Davidson and other scientists to further explore the convergence of neuroscience and contemplative traditions.

The Dalai Lama will join Davidson in a public dialogue at 2:15 p.m. on Sunday, May 16, at Madison’s Overture Center for the Arts. Daniel Goleman, best-selling author of “Emotional Intelligence” and “Ecological Intelligence” will moderate the conversation, “Investigating Healthy Minds.” Gov. Jim Doyle will deliver opening remarks, followed by a special musical performance by Madison Youth Choirs.

Tickets for this event are free and will be available to the public in mid-April. The conversation also will be available via live Web cast at http://www.investigatinghealthyminds.org.

The grand-opening weekend also includes a presentation by Jon Kabat-Zinn, founder of the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. His talk, “Mindfulness, Meditation and Health: Transformation and Healing at the Confluence of Science and Dharma,” will be available on the CIHM’s Web site shortly following the event.

The Dalai Lama also will participate in a private scientific meeting, co-sponsored by the CIHM and the Mind & Life Institute.

The Center for Investigating Healthy Minds includes a diverse mix of scientists from several different disciplines as well as scholars in the humanities. Their mutual focus on the study of healthy qualities of mind is aided by the major instrumentation housed in the Waisman Laboratory for Brain Imaging and Behavior.

“The center uses the plural ‘healthy minds’ to convey that there are many ways in which to have a healthy mind, and it is dedicated to studying this diversity,” Davidson explains. “The word ‘investigating’ is used since we do not yet know exactly what constitutes healthy qualities of mind. Part of the center’s mission is to conduct research explicitly examining this question.”

The center plans to use its research to bring practices that encourage healthy qualities of mind to schools, prisons, medical settings and the world at large. It is currently working with three community populations: children and educators in the Madison Metropolitan School District, the Wisconsin Department of Corrections and returning Wisconsin veterans.

“This center combines the basic behavioral and neuroscientific research that is necessary to move our field forward with the translational component, which is critical to extend our work beyond the walls of our laboratory,” Davidson says. “By developing and offering interventions for schools, hospitals, prisons and communities, we hope to create real change for society.”

The topic of the May teachings is “The Heart Sutra.” This sutra (teaching of the Buddha) is a member of the Perfection of Wisdom (Prajñāpāramitā) class of Mahāyāna Buddhist literature. The Buddha gave this wisdom teaching at Rajagriha Peak in India after he reached enlightenment. It expresses the “heart” of the Buddhist religion as it expounds the importance of compassion and wisdom.

This will be the Dalai Lama’s sixth visit to the TMBCC. He first visited Bloomington in 1987 to dedicate the Janchub Chorten when the center was known as the” Tibetan Cultural Center.” In October 2007, he changed its name to the “Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center” to broaden its mission by including the Mongolian Buddhist culture. At that time, he gave teachings on Atisha’s Lamp to the Path to Enlightenment at IU Auditorium and a Public Talk at IU Assembly Hall entitled “Compassion, the Source of Peace.”

The Soundtrack CD to the Dalai Lama Renaissance is now available for purchase, here: www.DalaiLamaCD.com

An original musical mosaic embodying the experiences and universal truths the Dalai Lama personifies. Tibetan, Indian, Sufi, Jazz and Afro-Cuban music overlaid with pearls of wisdom in the Dalai Lama’s own words and with the voice of Harrison Ford.

“…fascinating, ravishingly beautiful and sonically soothing…” - John Griffin - Montreal Gazette

A Review from L.A. Yoga magazine:

Febuary 15, 2010

This important album was assembled and produced by Michel Tyabji and Rosa Costanza Tyabji as part of a documentary titled Dalai Lama Renaissance. The soundtrack album consists of twenty-six tracks of Tibetan-influenced chants and pieces of music that work as a perfect audio accompaniment to the visual images of the Dalai Lama. Each offering on this album is part of a collective providing a narrative that is overwhelmingly beautiful, compassionate and enlightened. There are numerous amazing artists on this collection and if you are a devotee, or just a supporter of the Dalai Lama’s journey, this album is a must-have.

Producer, music director and performer on many pieces, Tyabji has appeared playing drums and percussion throughout the world and is known for his work with legendary African artists including Ndala Kasheba and Garikayi Trikoti. Tyabiji is only one of many exceptional artists here, in the company of Larry Mitchell, Ralph “Kito” Rodriguez and composer, keyboardist and arranger Henry Medicine Bear Reid, all of whom produce music worth a listen. Tibetan singer/songwriter Techung plays traditional Tibetan instruments and prayers for the Dalai Lama on instrumental tracks and Roop Verma offers an inspired “Alap,” along with other gorgeous tracks. In “Bassant Blue,” and “Jog Jazz,” the New Delhi-based ensemble called Yoginis’ deep thoughtful drones were produced by Seattle-based composer Yogi McCaw. Also noteworthy, Lama Tsering Wangdu Rinpoche had me in tears with his delivery of “Lady of Great Bliss.”

Along with many of the musical tracks offered on this special CD, the listener can also enjoy hearing the words of His Holiness which helps to bring his message of “hope” home. I highly recommend this album for anyone interested in world music and a follower of the Dalai Lama’s journey throughout the world and hopefully back into his homeland someday soon. www.DalaiLamaCD.com .

A Review from “Light and Consciousness” Magazine:

A documentary film soundtrack, produced by Michel Tyabji and Rosa Costanza Tyabji. This is much more than a soundtrack of the film reviewed above. It is an eclectic remix of quotations by the Dalai Lama and narrations by Harrison Ford interspersed with a dynamic fusion of Tibetan, Indian, Sufi, Jazz and Afro- Cuban music. Featured musicians include Michel Tyabji, Tibetan recording artist Techung, Henry Medicine Bear Reid, Roop Verma, Persian vocalist Heyraneh, Lama Tsering Wangdu Rinpoche, Ralph “Kito” Rodriguez and several others. As with the film, this soundtrack is a unique journey that embodies the universal wisdom His Holiness personifies.

Dalai Lama and Harrison Ford Film Inspires Prison Inmates to Resolve Conflicts

Khashyar | January 19, 2010

The Dalai Lama Renaissance film, narrated by Harrison Ford (www.DalaiLamaFilm.com), and a Q&A with Director Khashyar Darvich, offer insights on inner peace to men behind bars, half of whom are incarcerated for murder.

'Dalai Lama Renaissance' Documentary Film Producer-Director Khashyar Darvich speaks with inmates after a screening of the film at the Stiles Maximum Security Prison near Houston, Texas. Over half of the inmates in the audience are serving time for murder.

HOUSTON, TX – In a rare opportunity to contemplate the nature of their own existence and explore the essence of inner peace, dozens of inmates at two Texas prisons gained insights during screenings of the award-winning documentary film Dalai Lama Renaissance, narrated by Harrison Ford (www.DalaiLamaFilm.com). The film screened at the prisons as part of an ethics program organized by “Project Clear Light,” a nonprofit Buddhist volunteer organization that works with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, and is scheduled to screen at other prisons across the United States in the coming months.

“There is such joy in being able to show films like Dalai Lama Renaissance to inmates,” said Terry Conrad, a certified volunteer Chaplain’s assistant, and Director of Project Clear Light. “It is so rewarding to sit in meditation and have a conversation with them about what is really important, and to understand who we are and what we are capable of.”

Conrad asked the film’s Producer-Director, Khashyar Darvich, to show Dalai Lama Renaissance to inmates whom Conrad regularly meets with and teaches. With approval from prison administrators, two screenings were scheduled: one in the Stiles prison in Beaumont, Texas, and one in Ramsey prison, south of Houston. Darvich then volunteered to fly to Texas to speak with inmates after each screening. About half of the inmates in the prison audiences were convicted of murder.

“The intention of making this film was to impact audiences in a positive way,” said Director-Producer Khashyar Darvich of Wakan Films. “I had never been to a prison before, but I had a deep sense that inmates may have something to say about the film’s theme of overcoming the ego and opening one’s heart.”

Both Darvich’s and Conrad’s purpose in screening the film for inmates was to provide them with a message that urges them to focus on improving themselves from the inside out.

“I heard the Dalai Lama talking about the importance of compassion for compassion’s sake, because it’s the right thing to do,” said David, an inmate at the Ramsey Unit. “Because that’s what makes you happy inside, it’s what helps you develop inner peace…. When he started talking about it, I just started getting tingly all over…. It really touched me.”

“What I thought was so profound about the film was the child-like simplicity of the Dalai Lama and the profoundness of his understanding of how human nature and humanity works,” said Deon, another inmate at Ramsey.

The award-winning film, which is narrated by Harrison Ford, and has screened in hundreds of cinemas around the world in several languages, follows a group of Westerners who travel to India with the task of solving world problems under the spiritual guidance of the Dalai Lama. The film contrasts the Westerners’ intellectual approach to problem-solving against the enlightened approach of the Dalai Lama, and illustrates how the participants experience a profound personal transformation.

Besides opportunities for introspection, the film also offered inmates some chances to laugh at the imperfection of humanity.

“It was funny to see these super-smart people and realize that they were too smart for the task,” said Jason, a prisoner at Ramsey, about the scientists and other world thought-leaders in the film.

Inmate Kelly added, “I saw something in the Dalai Lama that I now see in my own personal life, which is joy and compassion and peace.”

At both prisons, the inmates were attentive to the film and looked for ways to apply its lessons to their personal lives.

“I took a few notes, but I feel like I missed about 20,000 more than I was able to put down,” said John, an inmate at Stiles prison.

Fellow Stiles inmate Antoine added, “I could watch something like this every day, especially in the environment I’m in. You know, it’s like a snake pit. But if you’ve got inner peace, you will affect every person around.”

Darvich plans to offer the film for screenings at other prisons around the country, and would like to attend and speak with other inmate groups in person.

“The fundamental intention of making this film was to impact and transform audiences in a positive way,” Darvich said,  “and I can think of no better place to screen the film than a prison.”
