‘Dalai Lama Renaissance’ the award-winning 81-minute documentary feature narrated by Harrison Ford, screens at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, 2009, at the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque, 11141 East Blvd. The film’s screening earlier this year at the Cleveland Museum of Art drew the largest audience of any film in the museum’s 25-year history of showing films.

Following the Q&A, Tibetan musician, composer and recording artist Techung will perform on the Tibetan lute and flute. Techung wrote and recorded the soundtrack music for ‘Dalai Lama Renaissance.’ He recently performed at Carnegie Hall with jazz musician Phillip Glass. Techung is best known for his performances of traditional Tibetan music, dance, and opera under the name Tashi Dhondup Sharzur. Techung’s credits include vocal and musical performances on the soundtracks of ‘Everest,’ ‘Windhorse’ and the upcoming Tibetan feature film ‘Dreaming of Lhasa.’ His work is also featured in the audio book ‘Dalai Lama, My Son’ by Diki Tsering.

Joining Darvich in the Q&A will be Dr. Thomas A. Forsthoefel, Chair of the Religious Studies Department at Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pa. Forsthoefel is the author of ‘The Dalai Lama: Essential Writings,’ a compilation of teachings on wisdom, compassion, and meditation by the 14th Dalai Lama.

NEW YORK CITY- The official representative of the Dalai Lama to the Americas, Mr. Lobsang Nyandak, from the Office of Tibet in New York, will be conducting the Q&A session after a screening of “Dalai Lama Renaissance” on February 28 at 4 p.m. at the Rubin Museum of Art.

This follows a very successful opening of “Dalai Lama Renaissance” last weekend (February 21 ans 22), to a full theater, where Producer-Director Khashyar Darvich conducted Q&A’s with audiences.

“Dalai Lama Renaissance,” the award-winning documentary film about the Dalai Lama that is narrated by Harrison Ford, will be playing for 2 more days only on Saturday February 28 and March 1 at the prestigious Rubin Museum of Art.

“Dalai Lama Renaissance” has been released in theaters around the world, including in over 80 cities in the U.S., and has won 12 international awards.

MR. LOBSANG NYANDAK

Mr. Lobsang Nyandak assumed the post of the Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to the Americas on September 1, 2008.

Mr. Nyandak is a former Cabinet Member of the Central Tibetan Administration. As a Cabinet Member, he headed the Department of Information and International Relations, the Department of Finance and the Department of Health.

Prior to his appointment to the Tibetan Cabinet, he worked as the founding Executive Director of the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy and also as a member of the Tibetan parliament.

He also worked in various Tibetan NGOs, in particular, Tibetan Youth Congress and National Democratic Party of Tibet.

Before joining the Office of Tibet, he worked as Development Director of the Tibet Fund, New York.

SAN FRANCISCO- Renown Tibetan musician Techung, who wrote and recorded all of the Tibet music for ”Dalai Lama Renaissance”, and who recently peformed at Carnegie Hall with Phillip Glass, will be joining “Dalai Lama Renaissance” Producer-Director Khashyar Darvich for Q&A’s at the Red Vic Theater in San Francisco.

Techung will join Khashyar at the Sunday 4 p.m. and Monday 7: 15 p.m. screenings of the film at the Red Vic.

It is also possible that another very special guest may join Khashyar and Techung at the Monday 7:15 p.m. screening.

Techung is one of the most respected Tibetan musicians in the world, with his music used in other films.

Tashi Dhondup Sharzur (Contributing Music)

Techung is a prominent Tibetan singer/songwriter living in exile in the San Francisco Bay Area. He is best known for his performances of traditional Tibetan music, dance, and opera under the name Tashi Dhondup Sharzur. He uses his childhood nickname, Techung, when performing as a solo artist. Whether performing in traditional or contemporary styles, Techung’s dual goals are to revive Tibetan music in the Tibetan community and to expose the rich performing cultural tradition of his homeland to the world community. In addition to being looked up to as one of the key keepers of traditional Tibetan musical traditions, Techung is also respected for the original solo and collaborative music he creates by drawing on both his own heritage and his familiarity with other world music traditions. Techung’s voice and music have been featured on the soundtracks of the IMAX film “Everest,” the feature film “Windhorse,” the documentary films “Stranger in My Native Land,” “Tibet’s Stolen Child,” and “Three Days for Tibet” (about a concert in Dharamsala with Joan Osborne, Zakir Hussein and other musicians). His music was also featured on PSA’s for the Milarepa Fund (promoting the 1999 Tibetan Freedom Concert), Students’ For a Free Tibet’s DVD demo “Tibet Will Be Free”, and Amnesty International (soliciting support for the human rights case of Ven. Palden Gyatso), as well as on an audio book by Diki Tsering titled “Dalai Lama, My Son.” His music is currently being used in the documentary film “What Remains of Us” which was selected at 2004 CANNES film festival. SAN FRANCISCO “Dalai Lama Renaissance” (the award-winning documentary film about the Dalai Lama, narrated by Harrison Ford), opens at the Red Vic Movie House in San Francisco on Sunday February 15, 2009, and will screen through Monday February 16.

Producer-Director Khashyar Darvich will appear in person to answer questions from the audience after most of the screenings.

To date, “Dalai Lama Renaissance” has screened in over 80 U.S. cities, as well as in cinemas around the world. It is the official selection of over 40 international film festivals, and has won 12 awards.

The film tells the story of forty of the world’s most innovative thinkers who travel to the Himalayan Mountains of India to meet the Dalai Lama to solve many of the world’s problems. What happened was surprising and unexpected, and was captured by a 5-camera, 18-person crew.

“I narrated Dalai Lama Renaissance,” says Harrison Ford, “because I believe His Holiness is making a positive influence in our world. For me, the film represented an opportunity to continue assisting the optimistic efforts of an extraordinary individual.”

The film features two of the quantum physicists who starred in the hit theatrical documentary “What the Bleep Do We Know”- Physicists Fred Alan Wolf and Amit Goswami. Also appearing in “Dalai Lama Renaissance” are Michael Beckwith (who appeared, with Wolf, in the film “The Secret”), Air America radio host Thom Hartmann, and other prominent figures.

“Hoop Dreams” Co-Filmmaker Frederick Marx calls Dalai Lama Renaissance a “Marvelous film! Dalai Lama Renaissance reminds us of some most important lessons.”

John Griffin of the Montreal Gazette called Dalai Lama Renaissance “a provocative, even enlightening film… fascinating, ravishingly beautiful and sonically soothing.” Bob Graham of the San Francisco Bay Times writes that the film is “an extraordinary portrait of His Holiness at work… Some of the best” comic scenes in any new film out there right now.”

On February 21, “Dalai Lama Renaissance” makes its New York premiere at the prestigious Ruben Museum of Art for several days. Producer-Director Khashyar Darvich will also appear in person for a Q&A during the February 21 and 22 screenings.

The DVD of the film is scheduled for release in April 2009.

“Dalai Lama Renaissance” extends U.S. theatrical release as a result of strong demand from audiences and theaters DVD release date extended to April 1

LOS ANGELES- Because of strong demand from audiences and movie theaters, “Dalai Lama Renaissance” has extended its theatrical exhibition in the United States through March 31, 2009, so that additional theaters will be able to screen the award-winning documentary for theatrical audiences.

As a result, the DVD release date of “Dalai Lama Renaissance” has been rescheduled for April 1, 2009.

“Dalai Lama Renaissance” (which is narrated by Harrison Ford, and Produced and Directed by Khashyar Darvich), began its U.S. theatrical exhibition on May 23, 2008, and has screened in over 80 U.S. cities.

The film, which has won 12 international awards, has been held over at several theaters in the United States where it has been scheduled, including at the Roxie Theater in San Francisco, CA and the Hollywood Theater in Portland, Oregon (both of which held the film over for 2 additional weeks).

At the Harkins Valley Art Theater in Tempe, Arizona, “Dalai Lama Renaissance” set the single day ticket sales record at the theater, selling more tickets in a single day than any other film in the history of the theater.

On January 23 and 25, 2009, “Dalai Lama Renaissance” had the largest audience turnout in the 25 year history of the Cleveland Museum of Art, according to Museum Film Program Director John Ewing.

Recently, the Drexel Theatre in Columbus, Ohio, and the Circle Cinema in Tulsa, Oklahoma, both extended the exhibition of “Dalai Lama Renaissance.” Circle Theater manager Amberla Tepe said that “Dalai Lama Renaissance” is attracted larger audiences than any other film playing at the theater. At Columbus’ Drexel Theatre, “Dalai Lama Renaissance” has outperformed some of this year’s Oscar-nominated films.

The Film also has also been released theatrically in other countries of the world, and has been translated and subtitled into several languages, including German, French, Italian, Hebrew, Chinese and Japanese.

New York Theatrical Premiere ‘Dalai Lama Renaissance’ Opens Feb. 21 at Rubin Museum of Art

“Dalai Lama Renaissance,” the award-winning 81-minute feature documentary narrated by Harrison Ford, premieres in New York City on Sat., Feb. 21 at 4 and 6 p.m. at the Rubin Museum of Art, 150 17th St. “Dalai Lama Renaissance” also screens at the museum at 4 and 6 p.m. on Sun., Feb. 22, and Sat., Feb. 28; and at 4 p.m. on Sun., March 1. A question-and-answer session with Producer/Director Khashyar Darvich follows each screening.

“Dalai Lama Renaissance” is among the top-grossing documentaries of 2008. This important film on human rights and world peace has screened in more than 40 cities around the U.S. and is the official selection of 40 film festivals around the world where it earned a dozen awards. The Jan. 25 screening of “Dalai Lama Renaissance” at the Cleveland Museum of Art sold out both auditoriums, a first in the museum’s 25-year history of screening films.
