DHARAMSALA, India – In a letter to newly elected Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-Wen, exiled Tibetan leader the 14th Dalai Lama congratulated the pro-independence Ms. Tsai on her landslide victory in her country’s presidential election.
According to the Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the Dalai Lama wrote: “It is indeed encouraging to see how firmly rooted democracy has become in Taiwan. It is a model and source of inspiration to those who aspire for freedom and accountable leadership. As someone dedicated to promoting democracy, I salute what the people of Taiwan have accomplished.”
The Dalai Lama also encouraged Taiwan to maintain a positive relationship with Mainland China.
The Tibetan spiritual leader wrote that during his 2009 visit to Taiwan, he was impressed to see first-hand the progress that the People of Taiwan had made in the areas of economics and education.

“It is important that such links should grow and be extended to include increased people to people exchanges.”
The election of President Tsai may bring an ally to the Dalai Lama and to the Tibetan People, as there are reports that in early 2015, while she was the leader of her Democratic Progressive Party , that that she secretly sent an invitation to the Dalai Lama at his residence in Dharamsala, India to visit Taiwan.
